History/Philosophy: The Astones have been growing a large variety of magnificent proteas and other exotic plants using organic methods since 1981 in Aptos. They are a “dry farmed” flower producer—the only watering the plants receive is during their first two summers after planting. The plants thrive in full sun in slightly sandy soil on hillsides where the soil can drain, and away from any water sources. Fertilizer and mulch are not applied. These are conditions similar to their places of origin.
The protea are magical with their variety of hues, shapes and textures. Many bloom continuously for many months. When not in bloom, the plants' decorative leaves take center stage. In addition to selling at the farmers markets, the Astones supply several florists in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties with cut flowers.
