SUMMARY:Celebrating 50 Years of the Monterey Certified Farmers Markets!
DESCRIPTION:Join the Aptos Farmers Market on Saturday\, June 20\, for a joyful community celebration marking the 50th Anniversary of the Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets. \nFor five decades\, the markets have brought together local farmers\, food artisans\, chefs\, and neighbors through a shared love of fresh food\, sustainable agriculture\, and community connection. What began in 1976 as a modest local market has grown into one of the most respected farmers market organizations in California — and a beloved weekly tradition for generations of Central Coast families. \nTo celebrate this milestone\, market visitors are invited to enjoy birthday cake shared with the community and enter a special raffle drawing for a beautifully curated market basket filled with market favorites. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nBirthday cake shared with market customers\nGiveaway of reusable produce bag sets to first 150 people to wish us happy birthday!\nRaffle drawing for a seasonal market basket\nA festive celebration with music honoring 50 years of local agriculture and community\nOpportunities to meet the farmers\, food artisans\, and vendors who make the markets so special\nFresh seasonal produce\, flowers\, artisan foods\, seafood\, baked goods\, cheeses\, and more from local vendors\n\nA Legacy of Community and Stewardship\nToday\, the family of Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets includes four vibrant markets in Aptos\, Carmel\, and Monterey\, each reflecting the unique character of its community. Two of the markets operate year-round\, offering dependable gathering places where fresh food\, conversation\, and connection are always in season. \nWith more than 90 dedicated vendors\, the organization continues to support small family farms while strengthening regional food systems across the Central Coast. \nMuch of this success reflects the longtime leadership of Executive Director Catherine Barr\, whose dedication and vision have guided the organization since 1993. Her work preserving access for small farmers and championing certified farmers markets has helped shape MBCFM into a regional leader in sustainable local food systems. \nFounded in 1976\, the Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets is the oldest and largest farmers market organization on California’s Central Coast. In recent years\, MBCFM has been recognized among the best farmers market organizations in California and ranked second in the United States by the American Farmland Trust — an achievement made possible by the farmers\, vendors\, staff\, volunteers\, and loyal market communities who continue to support the markets year after year.

SUMMARY:Monterey Bay Iris Society Rhizome Sale
DESCRIPTION:Bring lasting color to your garden with beautiful\, locally grown irises! The Monterey Bay Iris Society will hold its Annual Iris Rhizome Sale at the Aptos Farmers Market at Cabrillo College on Saturday\, August 8\, beginning at 8 a.m. \nGardeners are encouraged to arrive early for the best selection. \nThe sale features healthy iris rhizomes from the private collections of Monterey Bay Iris Society members. Visitors can expect an impressive assortment of colors and varieties\, including the tall bearded irises for which the annual sale is especially well known. \nExperienced iris growers will be available to answer questions\, help shoppers select varieties\, and provide printed information about planting and caring for irises. \nAn Excellent Choice for Central Coast Gardens\nIrises are especially well suited to gardens in the Monterey Bay region. They bloom spectacularly in spring\, require relatively little summer water once established\, and thrive in our mild climate. \nWith plenty of sunlight\, well-drained soil\, and a little seasonal care\, irises can provide years of colorful blooms. They are also easy to divide and share\, making them a rewarding choice for both beginning and experienced gardeners. \nHow to Plant Iris Rhizomes\nLate summer and early fall—particularly August and September—are ideal times to plant iris rhizomes in our area. Planting during this period allows the rhizomes to establish roots before cooler weather arrives. \nChoose a location with well-drained soil and at least six hours of sunlight each day. \nDig a wide\, shallow hole and create a small mound of soil in the center. Place the rhizome on top of the mound and gently spread the roots around it. Cover the roots with soil\, leaving the upper surface of the rhizome exposed or only barely covered. Planting too deeply can prevent the iris from blooming properly. \nSpace rhizomes approximately 18 to 24 inches apart\, depending on the variety and the amount of room available. \nWater thoroughly after planting and keep the soil lightly moist—not soggy—until new roots and leaves begin to grow. Once established\, irises generally require less frequent watering. \nIf your garden has sandy soil\, adding compost can help improve moisture retention. Heavy soils may benefit from amendments that improve drainage. \nFertilizing and Seasonal Care\nApply a balanced\, low-nitrogen fertilizer in late winter and again several weeks before bloom. Avoid placing fertilizer directly against the rhizome. \nIn the Monterey Bay area\, most irises bloom during April and May. After flowering\, remove spent bloom stalks\, but allow the green leaves to remain so they can continue nourishing the rhizome for the following year. \nJoin the Monterey Bay Iris Society\nThe Monterey Bay Iris Society welcomes gardeners of all experience levels. The group meets on the third Friday evening of each month and offers opportunities to learn from experienced growers\, discover new iris varieties\, and connect with other local gardening enthusiasts. \nFor membership information\, contact Brenda Wood at (831) 818-4515 or visit the Monterey Bay Iris Society’s website. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to take home locally grown iris rhizomes—and plenty of expert advice—at the Aptos Farmers Market on Saturday\, August 8.
