Founded in 1976, Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets (MBCFM) is the oldest and largest farmers market organization on California’s Central Coast. We operate four certified farmers markets—Aptos, Carmel, and two in Monterey—each reflecting the character of its community. Two markets operate year-round.
MBCFM has been widely recognized for excellence, earning multiple “Best Farmers Market” awards at the local, state, and national level, including top rankings by the American Farmland Trust.
Our Bountiful Region
Stretching from northern Santa Cruz County to the Monterey Peninsula, our region is one of the most agriculturally rich areas in the country. It is home to an exceptional concentration of organic farms, wineries, and artisan food producers, and has long been a leader in sustainable agriculture.
Santa Cruz County is recognized as the birthplace of the modern organic movement, dating back to 1967 at UC Santa Cruz. Today, the region supports more organic operations than any other area in California.
At the Markets
With more than 90 vendors, our markets offer an abundant selection of seasonal produce and flowers from small regional farmers, many of whom are certified organic or use sustainable practices. Shoppers also find locally produced meats, eggs, dairy, olive oil, honey, mushrooms, seafood, artisan breads, pastries, preserves, sauces, coffee, and specialty foods—along with professional knife and garden-tool sharpening at select markets.
Certified and Community-Focused
As a certified farmers market organization, MBCFM ensures that farmers sell only what they grow themselves. In support of our communities, we also donate up to three booth spaces each month to local nonprofit organizations.
Our Team
MBCFM is powered by farmers, vendors, and a dedicated staff led by Executive Director Catherine Barr. Since 1993, Catherine has guided the growth of the markets while championing small family farmers. Her work was recognized with the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau’s Al Smith Friend of Agriculture Award.
From modest beginnings, Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets have grown into vibrant gathering places that celebrate local agriculture, sustainability, and community.
