This Saturday, a Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) representative will be at the Aptos Farmers Market at Cabrillo College to assist seniors over 60 in obtaining an SFMNP check booklet at the information booth.
The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program is a federally funded program administered nationally by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services Agency, and in California by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA).
Helping Low-Income Seniors Buy Healthy Food at Farmers Markets
The goal of the California SFMNP is to increase low-income seniors’ access to nutritious, local foods and to provide fresh, unprepared, locally-grown produce, cut herbs, and raw honey through Certified Farmers’ Markets to low-income seniors. Fewer than one-third of senior citizens in the United States eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, vital to preventing and treating health problems. Qualified senior recipients may receive only one check booklet per season. Quantities are limited.
CDFA partners with the Area Agencies on Aging (AAA’s) throughout California. Local AAA’s help administer the SFMNP Check Booklets to eligible seniors at select distribution sites.
